PDFCreator is an application for converting documents into Portable Document Format (PDF) format on Microsoft Windows operating systems. It works by creating a virtual printer that prints to PDF files, and thereby allows practically any application to create PDF files by choosing to print from within the application and then printing to the PDFCreator printer.
Since 2009, PDFCreator has included closed source adware, toolbars and other controversial software that is installed by default.[4]
Implementation[edit]
The application is written in Microsoft C# and released to the public at no charge. It works with 64-bit and 32-bit Windows versions including Windows 10. The actual PDF generation is handled by Ghostscript, which is included in the setup packages.
Besides being installed as a virtual printer, PDFCreator can be associated with .ps files to manually convert PostScript to PDF format.
PDFCreator can convert to the following file formats: PDF (including PDF/A (1b and 2b) and PDF/X (X-3:2002, X-3:2003 and X-4)), PNG, JPEG, TIFF, TXT.[5] It also allows to digitally sign PDF documents.
Between 2009 and 2013 the installation package included a closed-source browser toolbar that was considered by many users to be malicious software. Although technically an optional component, the opt-out procedure used to be a two-step process (prior to version 1.2.3), which was considered by many to be intentionally confusing.[6] In addition to the spyware activity described below, the toolbar allowed one-click creation of PDFs from the current webpage and included a search tool. As of version 1.2.3, the opt-out procedure only required unchecking one checkbox during the installation process.[7]
Since version 0.8.1 RC9 (2005) PDFCreator supports access to its functionality via an ActiveX interface, allowing any COM enabled application to make use of its functionality.[8]
PDFCreator allows the user to disable printing, copying of text or images and modifying the original document. Smooze 1 5 6 – rediscover your mouse cursor. The user can also choose between two types of passwords, user and owner, to restrict PDF files in several ways. The former is required to open the PDF file, while the latter is necessary in order to change permissions and password. Encryption can be either 40-bit, compatible with Adobe Acrobat 3.0 or 4.0, or 128 bits for Acrobat 5.0 or higher.
Starting with version 0.9.6, there is full support for Windows Vista and version 0.9.7 provides support for Windows 7.[9][10]
Starting with version 3.0.0, PDFCreator ended support for Windows XP.[11]
Adware toolbar controversy[edit]
Starting with version 0.9.7 (February 2009),[10] PDFCreator included an adware toolbar.[12][13] The end-user-license agreement for PDFForge Toolbar by Spigot, Inc. (versions prior to 0.9.7 have a different, optional toolbar called 'PDFCreator Toolbar'), states that the software will:
..modify your Microsoft Internet Explorer and/or Mozilla Firefox browser settings for the default search engine, address bar search, 'DNS error' page, '404 error' page, and new tab page to facilitate more informative responses as determined by The Toolbar[14] https://nalquocombudd1988.mystrikingly.com/blog/hwh-ap2260-manual.
Pdfforge, which created PDFCreator, wrote an FAQ entry regarding the toolbar that stated:[15]
Is this spyware then? I think the main difference is if this is done unasked and undisclosed amount..Furthermore, the company works together with major Anti Ad- and Spyware companies to ensure, that it can be consider transparent and unharmful for the user. These include: Microsoft Windows, Anti-Spyware Webroot SpySweeper, Computer Associates Pest Patrol, PC Tools Spyware Doctor, Aluria Spyware Scanner and Spyware Eliminator.[15]
Since that time various versions of PDFCreator have included adware toolbars and other software with the installer, which many virus scanners identify as problematic or undesired software.
In March 2012 the company announced that the toolbar had been discontinued with version 1.3.0.[16] The company stated:
We have also removed the Toolbar from the setup, as it caused some confusion among the users. We are now trying a different advertising partner. This should reduce the problems the users had with the toolbar, as they felt that it was installed without their knowledge.'[16]
As of 23 March 2012, PDFCreator included the MyStart toolbar by Incredibar. On 13 June 2012, PDFCreator once again included another controversial bundled software package, which tests as spyware, called SweetIM.[17] In July 2012 the project disabled reviews and ratings on its sourceforge repository.[18]
On 30 August 2012, PDFCreator version 1.5.0 was released which included an installer for the 'AVG Security Toolbar.' There was an option to disable installation of the 'AVG Security Toolbar, but it was not clearly identified. Furthermore, installation of PDFCreator required acceptance of the AVG EULA even when installation of the 'AVG Security Toolbar' was disabled.[19]
On 23 October 2012, PDFCreator version 1.5.1 was released [20] which includes an installer for iClaro Search. Compared to previous adware choices, once installed, iClaro cannot be removed using the 'Add/Remove Programs' option.[21]
On 14 January 2013, PDFCreator version 1.6.2 was released[22] which includes an installer for Install Entrusted Toolbar. The setup screen for Install Entrusted Toolbar has a single option in black font. The description for Express (recommended) reads:
Install Entrusted Toolbar, set default search & new tabs to Entrusted Search, and set my homepage on my browsers to Entrusted Search[23]
In October 2013, PDFCreator was stealthily installing more software, including Amazon's Internet Explorer toolbar, without notifying the user.[24]
Awards[edit]
The now defunct OpenCD project chose PDFCreator as the best free software package for creating PDF files in Windows.[25]
In August 2008, InfoWorld magazine recognized PDFCreator with an Open Source Software Award from the field of more than 50 available open source or free PDF creation applications.[26][27]
Both of these awards predate the inclusion of the contested spyware.

Description
This template converts a date to one of the standard date formats used on the English Wikipedia.
Blizzard launcher download windows 10. This template should only be used internally in other templates.
If you want sortable dates for a table, use {{date table sorting}} instead.
Syntax
This template takes up to two parameters, both of which are optional:
{{date|
|}}
- is an (optional) date to be formatted.
- If no date is specified, the template emits the current date.
For example,{{date}}
produces 25 October 2020. To avoid emitting the current date if none is input, use Template:fdate. - If a date is provided, but is not recognized as one, the text is just returned as is. Most dates will however be recognized as such, including all the formats typically used on Wikipedia. Numerous variations thereof are also supported, including abbreviated or lower-case month names; ordinal 'st', 'nd', 'rd', 'th'; extraneous white space; missing comma, etc.
- Notes:
- Some dates are converted even if they are not real dates, and some dates are not converted even though they are real dates. See known issues below.
- Only dates within the range 1 January 1000 and 31 December 9999 are supported. Dates with two-digit years will have the years from 1970 to 2069. Other dates outside the range 1000–9999 will be treated as if the second parameter were 'none'.
- when using month numbers in numeric, the valid formats are MM/DD/YYYY, DD-MM-YYYY, DD.MM.YYYY, YYYY/MM/DD, YYYY-MM-DD, MM/DD/YY, YY-MM-DD, DD.MM.YY, the invalid formats are DD/MM/YYYY, MM-DD-YYYY, MM.DD.YY, YYYY.MM.DD, MM.DD.YYYY, DD-MM-YY, YY/MM/DD, DD/MM/YY, YY.MM.DD
- If no date is specified, the template emits the current date.
- controls the date format in which the result is to be emitted. Recognized values for the second parameter are:
DMY
gives d mmmm yyyy (e.g. 31 May 2007). This is the default format.MDY
gives mmmm d, yyyy (e.g. May 31, 2007)YMD
gives yyyy mmmm d (e.g. 2007 May 31)ISO
gives an ISO 8601 style yyyy-mm-dd (e.g. 2007-05-31)none
applies no formatting whatsoever
- If a date to be formatted is provided but no style is specified, the template emits a date in 'd month yyyy' format, as it appears (for example) on discussion pages. When no date is specified, then the current date is emitted with no year, either in 'd month' format for formatting style
DMY
, or in 'month d' format for formatting stylesMDY
,YMD
andISO
. - Notes:
- Although these are the four formats supported by MediaWiki's date autoformatting mechanism, only
DMY
/lDMY
andMDY
/lMDY
are in accordance with the English language Wikipedia's Manual of Style. The use ofISO
/lISO
(ISO 8601) format within article prose is expressly discouraged by the Manual of Style; this format should only be used in tables, lists, or references. - In each case, the result is exactly the same as what would be emitted by MediaWiki's date autoformatting mechanism.However, dates are not manipulated by MediaWiki's date autoformatting mechanism even when linked. This permits dates to have a consistent appearance regardless of whether they are linked or not.
- Wikipedia caches the current version of pages, and the template may display the date that the page was cached, rather than the current date.
- Although these are the four formats supported by MediaWiki's date autoformatting mechanism, only

Known issues
- Out-of-range values are 'fixed'
- The PHP library, that this template ultimately depends on, converts out-of-range values to the next-best in-range values. As a result, some date-like values that are not actually valid dates get converted anyway. These include..
- all dates with zero day-of-the-month. Such a 'zero-th' day of a month gets converted into the last day of the previous month.For example,
{{date|June 0, 2006}}
results in31 May 2006
.Similarly,{{date|0 January 2006}}
becomes31 December 2005
. - all dates with day-number values that exceed the number of days in the specified month cause the date to be incremented into the next month.For example,
{{date|31 November 2008}}
results in1 December 2008
, since November has only 30 days.Similarly,{{date|February 29, 2007}}
results in1 March 2007
, since 2007 was not a leap year.Note: Due to a parser peculiarity in the PHP library, 'December 32' and '32 December' are treated differently, and the latter results in an error (which causes this template to emit it unchanged), and only the former 'overflows' into the next month.
- all dates with zero day-of-the-month. Such a 'zero-th' day of a month gets converted into the last day of the previous month.
- Non-Gregorian dates are treated as Gregorian
- The PHP library that this template ultimately depends on assumes that all dates, irrespective of context, are Gregorian calendar dates. Consequently:
- some dates that would be valid in a non-Gregorian context are treated as out-of-range dates and converted to the next-best in-range values. For example,
{{date|30 February 1712}}
results in1 March 1712
because – even though 30 February 1712 is a valid date in the Swedish calendar – February 1712 had only 29 days in the Gregorian calendar. - ten dates are not reformatted. These are 29 February & 1 March of the years 1000, 1100, 1300, 1400, 1500. The cause of this is the same as that of the Swedish 30 February 1712.
- some dates that would not be valid in some contexts are converted normally. For example, 29 February 1912 or 1 February 1918 are not valid in a Russian context, but perfectly valid in the Gregorian one.
- some dates that would be valid in a non-Gregorian context are treated as out-of-range dates and converted to the next-best in-range values. For example,
- ISO 8601 format not suitable for years before 1583
The ISO 8601 standard requires mutual agreement between those using the format to use years earlier than 1583. Since no agreement has been obtained from our readers, that format should not be used for such years, nor for any date not in the Gregorian calendar.
- Output provided for ISO dates when year is missing
The current 2004 version of ISO 8601 does not permit omitting the year, but this template will produce a supposedly ISO output when the year is missing.
- Does not provide Microformats
- hCalendar and hCardmicroformats have various date properties, which are not emitted by this template. Use {{Start date}}, {{End date}}, {{Birth date}} or one of their variants, as necessary, in infoboxes which allow microformat-compatible date templates.
